District 16 is made up of 25 Clubs throughout Ireland, from Londonderry in the far North to Waterford in the South.
Our District Chairman this year is Margaret Henderson, from the Inner Wheel Club of Coleraine in the extreme North of the country. District secretary Jayne Johnston is a member of the Inner Wheel Club of Lisburn. We have 4 District meetings a year, which are well attended. They give us an opportunity to meet up with friends and make new ones and enjoy a meal together before conducting our business. The year begins with the District Assembly. This year it is to be held in Newforge Country Club. On this occasion each Office bearer meets their peer group and receives information on the expectations for the year. This year our District Charities will be Alzheimer's Society of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Alzheimer's Organisation. Last year we raised the amazing sum of £10,000 for Cancer Research (NI) and the Marie Keating Foundation. Thanks must go to Past District Chairman Majella McGee, for her outstanding leadership. Each year we attend the Annual Conference. Eighty ladies from District 16 went to the Conference in Bournemouth in April and had a most enjoyable three days. The speakers were excellent and the evenings full of fun and fellowship as the ladies generally enjoyed themselves. We were especially thrilled to have Past Association Editor Myrtle Buchanan, a member of the Inner Wheel Club of Londonderry installed as Association Vice Chairman GB&I. The Conference will be held in Blackpool in April 2008 and already we have over 80 ladies booked to attend. It is at this Conference we hope to cheer as Myrtle is announced as our Association Presidentfor 2008/2009. Not since 1972/73 when Dr Hylda Armstrong was Association President have we had anyone from District16 hold this position. Every three years there is an International Convention. The next one takes place in May, 2009 in Kota Kinabalu in the state of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Our International Theme for this year is Communicate Our Vision, which highlights the need for good communication on a global scale, and challenges us to look forward. Each year we have a Rally, when our Association President visits us. This is really an excuse for an end of year party, when we invite guests from Rotary and other Inner Wheel Districts. It is usually preceded with a pre Rally party, an occasion for frivolity and fun as we meet and greet one another. As a District we enjoy great times and as the categories for Membership now extends widely to any female relative of either a Rotary or Inner Wheel member as long as they are over 18 years old, there is no excuse for you not being part of this great organisation. Inner Wheel is one of the largest female organisations in the world.
